Big Changes and Important Happenings for UMA

Posted on January 6, 2026

We have incredibly exciting news to share with you! Utility Management Advisory (UMA) is
officially an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(6) entity. In case you are wondering, a 501(c)(6)
organization is an IRS tax-exempt nonprofit organization, which exists to promote the
common business interests of its members.

For years, we have operated with the exclusive sponsorship of RealPage, and we are deeply
grateful for their unwavering support and partnership during the past nine years.
Transitioning to our new nonprofit status has been a collaborative effort, and RealPage’s
commitment to our success has paved the way for our next chapter.

It was always the UMA’s mission to become a standalone organization. Operating as an
independent nonprofit is a strategic effort to fuel our growth and better serve you, our UMA
Community.

Our new nonprofit status allows us to:

  • Expand Expert Participation: We can now engage with a wider, more diverse pool
of subject matter experts from across the entire industry.
  • Diversify Sponsorships: By opening our doors to new partners, we are securing the
resources necessary to bring back our highly anticipated in-person Energy Summit.
    There will be cake.
  • Neutral Industry Advocacy: As a standalone entity, we can further exemplify our
position as the unbiased voice for utility management and sustainability.

A Change in Leadership

As we embark on this new journey, we are also announcing a significant transition within
our leadership team. After six years of visionary service, Lori Hanson is stepping down from
her role as President. Lori has been an extraordinary leader who transformed UMA. Under
her guidance, our membership reached new heights, and she was the driving force behind
the creation of the UMA Award, honoring excellence in our field. We cannot thank Lori
enough for the heart and dedication she poured into our organization. Lori will continue to
serve as our president to the end of the year, will remain an active member and serve on
the board.

Welcoming Our New President: Mary Nitschke

We are pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has unanimously approved Mary
Nitschke as our next President of UMA effective January 1, 2026. Mary is well known in the
multi-family utility management sector and was the founding member of the UMA in 2008.
She served as President of the UMA from its inception to 2019 and has served on our
leadership team since 2019 to the present. Mary is delighted to again lead an organization
she loves deeply.

Please join us in thanking Lori for her incredible legacy and welcoming Mary as we charge
forward to do great things in 2026!
